Best Time to Visit Cartagena
for Island Days & Beach Clubs

Cartagena is warm and sunny year-round — but knowing which months offer the clearest skies, calmest waters, and best conditions for a day on the islands makes all the difference.

The honest guide

Cartagena doesn't really have a bad time to visit — but it does have a best time.

Located on Colombia's Caribbean coast at 10° north of the equator, Cartagena enjoys warm temperatures year-round, averaging between 82°F and 92°F (28°C–33°C). The city doesn't experience dramatic seasonal swings like destinations in Europe or North America — but it does have two distinct seasons that affect your island experience: a dry season and a wet season.

For beach clubs and island day trips — which is what most travelers come for — the dry season from December through March offers the most reliable conditions. Skies are clearer, the sea is calmer, and the boat rides to the Rosario Islands or Tierra Bomba are smoother and more predictable. That said, short tropical showers in the wetter months rarely cancel a day on the water. The islands are open year-round and our operators run trips in most weather conditions.

The key insight: don't plan your trip around avoiding Cartagena — plan it around choosing the right experience for the conditions. That's exactly what this guide helps you do.

Best Island Experiences by Season

The right island depends on when you visit. In the calm, dry months the longer trip out to the Rosario Islands is more than worth it — the water is crystal-clear and perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and time on the boat. In the wetter shoulder and rainy months, the shorter crossings to Tierra Bomba and the road-accessible beaches of Barú keep your day reliable whatever the weather.

Common questions

Weather FAQ for Cartagena Island Trips

What happens to my island tour if it rains?

Light rain does not cancel island tours — the Caribbean is tropical and short showers are completely normal. Tours are only cancelled if maritime authorities restrict navigation due to genuinely unsafe sea conditions such as strong winds or rough water. If your tour is cancelled for safety reasons, you'll receive a full refund or free rescheduling. We monitor conditions closely and contact you in advance if there's any issue.

Is December to March really the best time for Rosario Islands?

Yes — December through March offers the most predictable conditions for the Rosario Islands. The 45-60 minute boat ride is smoother, skies are clearer, and you're more likely to have a full uninterrupted day on the island. That said, the Rosario Islands are open year-round and most of our experiences run on schedule even during the wetter months.

What about Tierra Bomba — does weather matter less?

Yes, significantly less. Tierra Bomba is just 10-15 minutes by boat from Cartagena, which means the crossing is shorter and sea conditions matter much less. It's the ideal destination if you're visiting during the wetter months or if you prefer a quicker, more accessible island escape.

Is Cartagena too hot in the summer?

It's warm — but manageable, especially at the beach. Temperatures average around 88-90°F (31-32°C) year-round with sea breezes on the islands. The humidity is higher from July to November, but once you're on the water or at a beach club, most travelers find it perfectly comfortable. The islands are actually cooler than the city itself.

Should I book in advance during peak season?

Yes — especially for December, January, and the Colombian holiday weeks (Semana Santa in March/April, mid-June, and mid-October). Popular beach clubs like Bora Bora and Capri fill up quickly. We recommend booking at least 3-5 days in advance during peak months, and 1-2 days during shoulder and low season.
