Everyone goes to the Rosario Islands. The turquoise water, the national park, the speedboat crossing — it's the default Cartagena island experience and it delivers. But there is a group of travelers who quietly choose Barú instead. Not because it's better. Because it's different in ways that matter to them.

No boat required. No dock fees. No pier line at 7am. You can arrive by air-conditioned van from your hotel door. And on the quieter eastern side of the Barú peninsula, two of the most private beach experiences near Cartagena are waiting — with almost no one else around.

What Makes Barú Different

Barú is a peninsula connected to the Colombian mainland — the only beach destination near Cartagena reachable by land. No national park, no mandatory dock fees, no fixed pier schedule. The western side is Playa Blanca — one of the most photographed beaches in Colombia. The quieter eastern side is where the luxury properties are, and where the real Barú begins.

By Land or By Sea — Choose Your Arrival

By Land — Van

Air-conditioned van from Juan Valdez, Convention Center. No pier, no dock fees. ~50 minutes to Playa Blanca.

Best for: Nena · families · no boat

By Sea — Speedboat

Direct speedboat from La Bodeguita — ~45 to 60 minutes. Scenic arrival. No dock fees. We coordinate after booking.

Best for: Sabai · Hotel Las Islas · scenic

No national park fee. No maritime insurance surcharge. Unlike the Rosario Islands where you pay COP $40,300 (~$10 USD) in cash at the pier, Barú has zero mandatory fees. What you book is what you pay.

The Beach Clubs in Barú

1. Nena Beach Club — Playa Blanca Done Right · From $65

Playa Blanca on a weekend without a plan is a different experience from the photos. Vendors, heat, and no shade can turn a beautiful beach into a stressful one. Nena Beach Club solves that entirely — a private designated area within Playa Blanca with beach beds, a welcome cocktail, Caribbean lunch, and a team that keeps the day organized so you don't have to.

The transport is part of what makes Nena work. An air-conditioned van picks you up at Juan Valdez at the Convention Center. No pier, no speedboat, no dock fee. Approximately 50 minutes and you're on one of the most beautiful white-sand beaches near Cartagena. Kayaks and paddleboards available on-site for guests who want to explore beyond the shoreline.

2. Sabai Beach Resort — Barú's Best Kept Secret · From $95

Sabai sits on the quieter eastern side of the Barú peninsula — away from Playa Blanca's crowds, away from the noise, away from the vendors. A boutique beach resort with a stunning pool, private white sand beach, and a relaxed wellness-focused atmosphere that feels genuinely off the beaten path.

Less known than the Rosario Islands clubs means more availability, more space, and a more personal experience. Sabai consistently surprises guests who discover it — and consistently earns a return visit. Ideal for couples and wellness travelers who want premium without the crowd.

Antoni's Tip

For Nena: arrive at Juan Valdez a few minutes before 9:30am — the van departs sharp, no exceptions. For Sabai and Hotel Las Islas: weekdays are better — more space, more personal. For any Barú trip: pack insect repellent. More relevant here than on the islands and the detail most travelers forget.

The Barú Insider — What Nobody Tells You

Playa Blanca on weekends is a different world

During high season and holidays it becomes one of the busiest beaches in Colombia. Go on a weekday — or book Nena to have a private area regardless of the crowd around you.

Pack insect repellent — it matters here

More relevant in Barú than on the Rosario Islands or Tierra Bomba. The vegetation near the beach means mosquitoes are more present, especially early morning and late afternoon.

No dock fees — none at all

Barú is not a national park. No COP $31,500 park entrance, no maritime insurance. Bring cash for tips and extras — but not for pier fees.

Persistent vendors on Playa Blanca are real

On the public beach, vendors approach regularly. A polite "no gracias" works. Booking with Nena means you're in a private area — the club keeps it vendor-free. That alone is worth the booking.

What to Bring to Barú

Sunscreen SPF 50+
Insect repellent — essential in Barú
Cash for tips and extras
Towel — not always provided
Fully charged phone
Light bag — don't overpack

Barú — Frequently Asked Questions

Neither is objectively better — they serve different travelers. The Rosario Islands have clearer turquoise water and a wider club selection. Barú has no dock fees, no boat required, and is accessible by land. If you want the most pristine Caribbean water: Rosario. If you want Playa Blanca without a boat ride, or a private luxury experience on the eastern coast: Barú.

Yes — Barú is the only beach destination near Cartagena reachable by land. The Nena Beach Club van departs at 9:30am from Juan Valdez at the Convention Center and takes approximately 50 minutes to Playa Blanca. For Hotel Las Islas, a private land transfer of approximately 2 hours is also available. We coordinate everything after booking.

No. Barú is not inside a national park. There is no mandatory national park entrance fee and no maritime insurance payment. No cash surprise at the pier. What you book is what you pay — one of Barú's clearest advantages over the Rosario Islands.

On weekdays outside high season — beautiful and relatively calm. On weekends and during high season (December–March, July–August), it becomes one of the busiest beaches in Colombia. Booking with Nena gives you a private designated area regardless of the public beach crowd around you.

9:30am sharp from outside Juan Valdez Coffee Shop at the Convention Center, Getsemaní. Arrive a few minutes early — the van does not wait. Return departs Playa Blanca at approximately 4:00pm and arrives back in Cartagena around 5:00pm.
