But there is a group of travelers who quietly choose Barú instead. Not because it's better. Because it's different in ways that matter to them.
No national park fees. No pier line at 7am. You can arrive by air-conditioned van from your hotel door. And on the quieter eastern side of the Barú peninsula, several of the most private and most accessible beach experiences near Cartagena are waiting, with an option for every budget.
What Makes Barú Different from the Rosario Islands
Barú is a peninsula connected to the Colombian mainland, the only beach destination near Cartagena reachable by land. No national park, no mandatory dock fees, no fixed pier schedule. The western side is Playa Blanca, one of the most photographed beaches in Colombia. The quieter eastern side is where the luxury properties are, and where the real Barú begins.
By Land or By Sea — Two Ways to Get to Barú from Cartagena
No national park fee. No maritime insurance surcharge. Unlike the Rosario Islands, where you pay COP $40,300 (about $10 USD) in cash at the pier, Barú has zero mandatory fees. What you book is what you pay.
Getting to Barú on Your Own
Not everyone wants to book a beach club package. Some travelers would rather rent a car, call an Uber, or grab a taxi and handle the day themselves. It's a real option, and it comes with real tradeoffs worth knowing before you go.
Playa Blanca sits about 60 km south of Cartagena, on the other side of the Barú bridge. A van from the city covers it in around 50 minutes; driving yourself usually takes closer to an hour, sometimes more once you add city traffic before the bridge.
The upside is obvious: your time is your own. Leave when you want, stay as late as the light holds out. The downside is that Barú is still a fairly remote peninsula. Getting an Uber back from the beach in the late afternoon can be slow, limited, more expensive than the ride out, or some days just not available. Cell signal is patchy in parts of the peninsula too, which makes it harder to request a return ride at the last minute if you're waiting until the end of the day to figure that out.
Going independently by boat means one of two things: joining a tour that drops you at a specific beach club, or renting your own private boat and deciding where to go once you're out on the water.
On the drive down, around Km 14.5 on the road to Barú, you'll pass the Aviario Nacional de Colombia, an open-air aviary with parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other native birds. It's worth a stop: the standard tour runs about an hour, though you can take your time and continue on to the beach whenever you're ready. If you drive yourself or get dropped off at Playa Blanca, there's a parking lot that runs about COP $40,000 for the day. From the lot it's roughly a 300-meter walk, about 7 minutes, down to the beach.
Playa Blanca is a public beach, so expect crowds and a steady stream of local vendors offering jet ski rentals, drinks, and other services. Ask the price and the payment method before you agree to anything. That's not a reason to avoid the local vendors, just a reason to ask first. Five Rules That Save You Money (and Headaches)
Playa Blanca's vendors are part of the local economy, and most interactions are perfectly friendly. A few habits, picked up from returning travelers, local operators, and Antoni's own visits, keep the day smooth:
Reaching Playa Tranquila on your own works the same way: park, walk the same 300 meters down to the beach, then look for one of the local boats offering the short crossing over. It's about a five-minute ride in a small, calm boat, and it saves you a 15-minute walk further along the sand.
Antoni's tip: If it's your first time in Barú, go with a tour or a local guide. It takes the guesswork out of transport, timing, and where to eat, and it's the easiest way to get it right on the first visit.
Playa Blanca vs Playa Tranquila: What's the Difference?
Playa Tranquila is technically an extension of the same beach as Playa Blanca, just further along the coast, but the two stretches feel different in practice.
Playa Tranquila has more hotels, bungalows, and beach clubs built up along it, and vendors there tend to keep a respectful distance to preserve a calmer atmosphere for the guests staying nearby.
Playa Blanca is the stretch most people see first, right where the path down from the parking lot lets out, so a lot of visitors never walk any further than that. It's busier, prices tend to run a little lower, and you'll see more Colombian travelers out enjoying the day. Playa Tranquila, because of the hotels nearby, tends to draw more international visitors.
The water is the same turquoise on both stretches, but there's more coral close to shore at Playa Tranquila, so it's worth wading in carefully. Playa Blanca has less reef to worry about underfoot.
