Tierra Bomba vs Rosario Islands — Which Should You Visit?
Tierra Bomba vs Rosario Islands — Which Island Is Better?
It's the most common question travelers ask before booking a beach day from Cartagena: Tierra Bomba or the Rosario Islands? Both are island experiences. Both leave from Cartagena. Both have great beach clubs. But they deliver completely different days — and choosing the wrong one can mean spending the whole trip wishing you'd gone to the other.
This guide gives you the honest answer, side by side, so you can decide with clarity.

This guide compares Tierra Bomba vs Rosario Islands side by side — including water quality, travel time, pricing, beach club variety, and which destination is actually better for your travel style and group.
The Single Biggest Difference
Water quality. This is what separates the two destinations more than anything else.
The Rosario Islands sit inside a protected national park — coral reefs, managed marine ecosystems, and no urban proximity. The water is turquoise, clear, and genuinely Caribbean. It looks like the photos. It is the photos.
Tierra Bomba is closer to Cartagena's bay. The water near the main beach areas is darker and warmer. On the far side of the island — where Makani, Fénix, and Palmarito are — the water is significantly better. But it still doesn't match the Rosario Islands for clarity.
If crystal-clear turquoise water is your top priority, the Rosario Islands win. If it's not your only priority, Tierra Bomba has strong arguments of its own.
"The water at the Rosario Islands was genuinely the clearest I've seen outside of the Maldives. Crystal clear, warm, and you can see straight to the bottom." — James T., London · TripAdvisor
Distance and Travel Time
Tierra Bomba: 10 to 20 minutes by boat from Cartagena. No fixed departure schedule — you go when you're ready. This is the closest island destination from the city.
Rosario Islands: 45 to 50 minutes by speedboat. Fixed departure window between 7:50 AM and 8:30 AM from Muelle La Bodeguita. Return between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
If flexibility matters — if you're traveling with kids, if your morning schedule is uncertain, or if you simply don't want an early alarm — Tierra Bomba is the more forgiving choice.
Fees
Tierra Bomba: No dock fee. No national park entrance. No cash scramble at the pier. What you book is what you pay.
Rosario Islands: Two mandatory fees paid in cash at the pier in Colombian pesos — National Park entrance (COP 31,500 / ~$8 USD) and Seguro Marítimo maritime insurance (COP 8,800 / ~$2 USD). Bring at least COP 50,000 (~$12 USD) per person in cash. Full pricing breakdown: Rosario Islands 2026 Cost Guide →
Beach Club Quality and Variety
Tierra Bomba has 6 beach clubs with genuine variety — from the resort luxury of Makani to the wellness focus of Namasté, the boho boutique vibe of Eteka, and the only nightlife option near Cartagena (Kabanna, open until 11 PM). See all 6 Tierra Bomba clubs →
The Rosario Islands have a wider selection — from social and party-focused (Bora Bora, IBBIZA) to boutique luxury (Capri, Paue) to exclusive island experiences (San Pedro de Majagua, Corona Island). More variety, higher overall quality, and clearer water to swim in.
Antoni's Pick — Best Club for Each Destination
For Tierra Bomba, my top recommendation is Makani Luxury Club — the largest pool on the island, a full spa, and resort-level service. If you want wellness over luxury, Eteka Slow Beach is one of my personal favorites — very intentional, very boho, very different from anything else near Cartagena.
For Rosario Islands, first-time visitors should book Capri Beach Club — it's #3 on TripAdvisor for all of Cartagena and consistently delivers. Couples looking for something more intimate should consider Paue Beach Lounge — boutique luxury, limited capacity, genuinely special.
Price Comparison
Tierra Bomba is generally more affordable — day passes start from $45 per person (Namasté) and go up to $89–100 for premium clubs like Makani and Fénix. No additional fees.
Rosario Islands start from $72 per person (Isla Bela) and go up to $216 (Corona Island), plus the ~$10 USD pier fees in cash. The higher price reflects better water conditions and more exclusive environments.
